Why Ghibli-Style AI Art Became a Viral Sensation

Ghibli-Style AI Art – The trend has taken the internet by storm. People are creating artwork using artificial intelligence that mimics the distinctive, whimsical style of Studio Ghibli films using your photos. The result is a fusion of nostalgic animation and modern technology that has captivated millions worldwide. These animated visuals are reminiscent of legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki’s work.

The Ghibli-style AI art is going viral, and even prominent figures like Elon Musk, Narendra Modi and Amitabh Bachchan have joined the crazy trend. However, the trend has also faced copyright infringement. While the trend continues, one question remains: Who started it?

The Person Who Sparked the Trend

Settled-base Software engineer Grant Slatton is credited with popularising the Ghibli-Style art. After OpenAI had introduced its upgraded image-generation tool, Slatton posted an AI-transformed photo of his family and dog on the beach on X with the caption, “Tremendous alpha right now in sending your wife photos of y’all converted to Studio Ghibli anime.”

His tweet rapidly gained attention, receiving over 45,000 likes and nearly 49 million views. As a result, users worldwide started transforming their pictures and sharing them on social media platforms, such as Instagram.

Amid the popularity of Ghibli-Style artificial intelligence art, even some critics of Open-AI have participated in the trend. Some posts and reels on Instagram go viral, saying that it is nothing but a way of collecting users’ data, especially personal photos.

Other concerns over the use of AI in replicating signature styles question the ethical implications of AI tools trained on existing works.
